Project Linus Sunday - with Jill

PROJECT LINUS SUNDAY with Jill UPSTAIRS

Join us today for a very worthy cause, and make a quilt for Project Linus UK, voluntary organisation. The aim is to provide a sense of security and comfort to sick and traumatised babies, children and teenagers through the provision of new, home-made patchwork quilts and give volunteers across the UK the opportunity to contribute to their local community. Volunteer Area Co-ordinators and their Assistants deliver around 3,500 quilts and blankets to sick, disabled or disadvantaged children across the UK each month. They cannot reach out to every distressed child but help to provide them with tangible evidence that someone cares, along with the physical reassurance that comes with being snuggled up in a quilt.

Project Linus always tries to deliver quilts and blankets to children who are local to the makers.

Project Linus began in America in 1995 when Karen Loucks saw a newspaper article showing how much a comfort blanket had helped a child cancer victim. She decided to organise blankets for her local children’s cancer unit and started spreading the word. Since that time, several million blankets and quilts have been delivered worldwide. The organisation began in the UK in March 2000 as a result of a Birmingham quilter’s desire to help children in need. There is now have a large network of volunteers across the UK who donate their time and skills to create beautiful blankets and quilts. Please ask if you would like more information, or join us today. Kits for the quilt tops are provided and you are invited to use our sewing machines.

PATTERN CUTTING…… with Linda UPSTAIRS

We all want a pattern that really fits us, and that is what today is all about. This is another opportunity as a repeat of the workshop that took place in May. During the morning you will learn how to draft a skirt pattern just for your own shape and size, and in the afternoon you will cut it out and make a Toile ["twahl"] which is an initial mock up of a garment made in calico so you can check and alter how the pattern fits your body before cutting into your nice fabric.
While taking accurate measurements to select your pattern size is a great first step in making a garment that fits you, there is more to fitting skirt than just waist and hip measurements. T

his workshop only has six places to ensure everyone gets plenty of help and attention.
